| Patriarchy and the need for equality at home | | | Ridhima
In many households, girls are expected to help in the kitchen and perform other household chores, while boys are encouraged to pursue their careers and enjoy greater freedom. Even when boys want to help with household work, elders often discourage them and teach them that it is only a woman’s responsibility. Patriarchy refers to a social system in which men are traditionally given more power and importance than women. Men are often expected to be leaders and decision-makers, while women may have fewer opportunities, rights, and influence. In many societies, boys are taught from childhood to focus on building successful careers without showing emotional vulnerability, as emotions are often considered a sign of weakness. On the other hand, women are expected to prioritize their families, children, and husbands, sometimes sacrificing their own ambitions and carrying the burden of household responsibilities alone. In several parts of the world, girls still do not receive the same educational opportunities as boys. Instead, they are prepared from an early age to become ideal wives and caregivers. As a result, many women face economic dependence and may feel pressured to obey others because they lack financial independence. Patriarchy can be observed in everyday life. In many homes, women spend most of their lives taking care of household responsibilities, while men enjoy greater freedom. I have personally witnessed a situation where a nine-year-old girl was asked to help her mother in the kitchen while her elder brother sat freely and did nothing. Such examples show how gender roles are passed down from one generation to another. Conclusion : Why not teach both boys and girls to value their careers while sharing household responsibilities equally? Our grandmothers and mothers have spent much of their lives under patriarchal norms without fully realizing their impact. It is now our responsibility to raise future generations with the values of equality and mutual respect. By challenging stereotypes and sharing responsibilities at home, we can create a society where everyone has the freedom to pursue their dreams, regardless of gender. |
