Udhampur, Aug 2:Residents of Ward No. 20, Sangoor, on Sunday voiced strong resentment against the Municipal Council, Udhampur, over the deteriorating sanitation system in the area. They alleged that ever since the tenure of the elected councillors ended, sanitation services have remained severely neglected, causing immense inconvenience to the public.
The residents said heaps of garbage have been lying unattended for years near residential houses, emitting a foul smell and posing a serious health hazard. They expressed concern that the accumulation of waste, especially during the monsoon season, has led to a rise in mosquitoes and other insects, increasing the risk of infectious diseases. Despite repeated representations to the Municipal Council, they claimed that no effective action has been taken and the authorities have limited themselves to assurances.
Responding to the complaints, District Congress Committee (DCC) Udhampur President Sumeet Magotra visited the locality and took stock of the sanitation situation. He inspected the garbage dumps, drains, and other affected areas before summoning the concerned Municipal Council officials and sanitation staff to the spot. During the inspection, Magotra asked the officials to witness the prevailing conditions firsthand and expressed strong displeasure over the department’s failure to maintain basic civic services.
Addressing the officials, Magotra said that ensuring proper sanitation is the primary responsibility of the Municipal Council and that the people cannot be made to suffer due to administrative negligence. He directed the authorities to launch an immediate sanitation drive and restore cleanliness in the ward within 24 hours by removing garbage dumps and cleaning the drains.
He warned that if the sanitation system is not restored within the stipulated time, the Congress Party, along with local residents, will launch a peaceful but strong protest, including a road blockade, against the Municipal Council. He said the responsibility for any such agitation would rest entirely with the administration and the Municipal Council.
Meanwhile, several local residents and youth appreciated Magotra for promptly responding to their grievances. They said he has consistently stood with the people and has always been available whenever public issues arise. They expressed hope that his intervention would ensure an early and lasting solution to the sanitation problems in the area.
The residents appealed to the administration to strengthen the functioning of the Municipal Council and ensure regular sanitation services in all wards so that citizens are provided with a clean, healthy, and hygienic environment. |
