More Species, Stronger Forests: Two Decades of Scientific Evidence

Forests are among Earth’s greatest natural assets. They provide oxygen, store carbon, regulate rainfall, protect wildlife, and support the livelihoods of billions of people. Yet forests are far more than collections of trees. They are living ecosystems where thousands of plant, animal, fungal, and microbial species interact in complex ways. Increasingly, scientists are discovering that the diversity of life within forests is not just a feature of healthy ecosystems—it is one of the main reasons forests remain productive and resilient.
A major international study spanning two decades has provided compelling evidence that forests with a greater variety of tree species perform better over time. By analyzing long-term observations from forests across different regions of the world, researchers found that species-rich forests improved their photosynthetic performance more rapidly than forests with fewer species. Photosynthesis—the process through which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into energy—is the foundation of all life on Earth. Stronger photosynthesis means healthier forests that absorb more carbon dioxide, produce more oxygen, and grow more efficiently.
The study offers an important message for the future. If biodiversity continues to decline, the positive trend in forest productivity could decrease by as much as 17 percent by 2050. Such a reduction would weaken one of nature’s most powerful defenses against climate change.
Why Biodiversity Matters
Each tree species possesses unique characteristics. Some grow rapidly, while others grow slowly but live for centuries. Some tolerate drought, while others flourish in wetter conditions. Certain species have deep roots that draw water from underground, while others improve soil fertility through nutrient cycling.
When many species coexist, they complement each other rather than compete for exactly the same resources. Different trees capture sunlight at different heights, use water from different soil layers, and respond differently to pests, diseases, and changing weather. This diversity allows forests to use available resources more efficiently and remain productive under a wide range of environmental conditions.
In contrast, forests dominated by only one or two species are more vulnerable. A single disease, insect outbreak, or prolonged drought can severely damage such forests because all the trees share similar weaknesses.
Nature’s Defense Against Climate Change
Forests play a critical role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide by storing carbon in trunks, branches, roots, and soils. Diverse forests generally grow more steadily and recover more quickly after disturbances, enabling them to capture larger amounts of carbon over long periods.
As climate change increases the frequency of heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires, biodiversity acts as a natural insurance policy. While some species may struggle under changing conditions, others continue to thrive, ensuring that the forest as a whole remains functional.
Protecting biodiversity therefore strengthens climate resilience while supporting global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Beyond Trees
Forest biodiversity includes far more than trees alone. Birds disperse seeds across landscapes. Bees, butterflies, and other insects pollinate flowering plants. Fungi recycle nutrients and form underground networks that help trees exchange water and minerals. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and microorganisms each contribute to maintaining ecological balance.
The loss of even a few species can disrupt these intricate relationships, reducing the health and productivity of entire ecosystems.
Human Activities Threaten Diversity
Unfortunately, biodiversity is declining worldwide due to deforestation, habitat fragmentation, pollution, invasive species, unsustainable logging, and climate change. Expanding agriculture and urban development often replace diverse natural forests with monoculture plantations or cleared land.
Although plantations can produce timber efficiently, they cannot fully replicate the ecological functions of natural, species-rich forests. Protecting existing natural forests remains one of the most effective strategies for conserving biodiversity.
What Can Be Done?
Governments, communities, businesses, and individuals all have roles to play. Conservation policies should prioritize the protection of old-growth forests and biodiversity hotspots. Reforestation projects should plant a variety of native species rather than relying on a single fast-growing tree.
Sustainable forest management, responsible timber production, restoration of degraded landscapes, and stronger enforcement against illegal logging are equally important. Supporting Indigenous and local communities, who have long protected many of the world’s forests, is also essential.
Individuals can contribute by reducing unnecessary paper consumption, supporting sustainably sourced forest products, planting native trees, and encouraging environmental education.
A Lesson from Nature
The findings from twenty years of scientific research reinforce a simple but powerful principle: diversity creates strength. Just as diverse societies benefit from different talents and perspectives, forests flourish when many species live together.
Protecting biodiversity is therefore not merely about saving rare plants or animals. It is about safeguarding the health, productivity, and resilience of the ecosystems upon which humanity depends. Healthy, species-rich forests provide cleaner air, stable climates, abundant wildlife, and sustainable resources for future generations.
The future of our forests will depend not only on how many trees we plant, but also on how much life we preserve within them. By protecting biodiversity today, we invest in stronger forests and a healthier planet for tomorrow.
