Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha while leading the Har Ghar Tiranga rally in Srinagar reminded the people that martyrs defended the nation with their blood and urged today’s generation to defend it with character, honesty, hard work, unity, and service.
It is a message that deserves serious reflection. The sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for the nation are huge. The freedom, sovereignty and unity that citizens enjoy today have come at a tremendous cost. Soldiers and other martyrs made the ultimate sacrifice so that future generations could live with dignity, security and opportunity. Remembering them, therefore, must also mean understanding the responsibilities that come with the freedoms they protected.
LG Sinha’s call to defend the nation with character is particularly significant. A strong nation is not built only by its armed forces. It is strengthened when citizens uphold honesty in their personal and professional lives, reject corruption, respect the law and discharge their responsibilities sincerely. Every citizen who performs his or her duty with integrity contributes to national strength.
Hard work is another form of service to the nation. Students who pursue education seriously, farmers who work to feed the country, entrepreneurs who create employment, workers who contribute to economic growth and public servants who serve people honestly are all participants in nation-building. Patriotism must therefore become a productive force that inspires citizens to contribute.
Unity is equally important. India’s strength lies in its diversity, and Jammu and Kashmir is a vivid example of this plural character. At a time when social divisions can be easily amplified through misinformation and political rhetoric, preserving communal harmony and mutual respect becomes a collective responsibility. The Tricolour represents all Indians, and its message is one of unity rather than division.
Service, too, should become a defining expression of patriotism. Helping the vulnerable, protecting the environment, supporting those in distress, respecting public spaces and standing together during difficult times are simple but powerful acts of national service.
The deeper objective of Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is to inspire a culture of responsibility. The best tribute to the martyrs is to ask ourselves how faithfully we are living the values for which they sacrificed their lives.
If the present generation embraces honesty, discipline, hard work, unity and service, it will truly carry forward the legacy of the martyrs. That would be patriotism not just in words, but in action. |
