GM NFR Inspects Redevelopment & Infrastructure Works at NJP and Katihar Railway Stations

MALIGAON, Aug 12: Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), carried out an extensive inspection of New Jalpaiguri and Katihar Railway Stations on 11th August, 2026, reviewing major ongoing infrastructure and passenger amenity works. At NJP, the General Manager inspected the progress of redevelopment of the World-Class Railway Station and directed officials to ensure timely completion of all works without compromising on quality, safety and passenger convenience. He also inaugurated the Experience Zone at Platform No. 1/2, a newly developed solar energy-based parking facility on the western side of NJP station, a new booking counter and an air-conditioned waiting hall at Platform No. 4. The existing passenger waiting area at Platform No. 5 has also been renovated to provide improved comfort and convenience to passengers.
During his visit to NJP, Shri Shrivastava also opened eight additional rooms at Kanchanjungha Officers' Rest House, further augmenting railway accommodation facilities at the station. He reviewed the progress of various ongoing works and the future course of action with concerned officials, stressing that the redevelopment of NJP should provide modern, passenger-friendly facilities while adhering to the stipulated timeframe. Senior officials from NFR Headquarters and Katihar Division, including Shri Nilmani Brahma, Principal Chief Engineer/NFR and Shri Kirendra Narah, Divisional Railway Manager/Katihar, accompanied the General Manager during the inspection programme.
As part of the inspection programme, the General Manager also conducted a window-trailing inspection of the recently commissioned Katihar-Kuretha and Katihar-Sonaili double-line sections, reviewing the newly commissioned infrastructure and associated works. The window trailing inspection of the railway section was done for taking stock of the condition of tracks, infrastructure and developmental works along the route. He advised the officials to remain focused on safety and ensure smooth and efficient railway operations. At Katihar Railway Station, Shri Shrivastava inaugurated a 132 kWp solar power plant at the passenger area, strengthening NFR's efforts towards adoption of renewable energy and sustainable railway infrastructure. He also inaugurated the renovated heritage 790 'B' Class NG locomotive of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). The historic locomotive, has been preserved and displayed at Katihar station as a reminder of the rich railway heritage of the region. The General Manager also inspected Katihar Railway Station and reviewed various developmental and passenger amenity works.
During the inspection and review meetings, the General Manager emphasised timely execution of all ongoing projects while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety and operational excellence. He directed officials to accord due priority to passenger convenience and ensure that infrastructure augmentation and station redevelopment works translate into improved travel experience for passengers. Shri Shrivastava appreciated the dedicated efforts of railway officials and staff towards continuous modernization, sustainable infrastructure development and provision of safe, reliable and passenger-friendly railway services across NFR.
