While addressing a function recently Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha asked the J&K youth to ensure that past mistakes are not repeated in future and where walls were once raised, they must build bridges of trust and construct an inclusive Viksit Bharat.
Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed decades of turbulence, political uncertainty and violence. The consequences of this troubled past have been particularly severe for the youth. Opportunities were lost, educational careers were disrupted and economic growth remained below its potential. Most importantly, mistrust became embedded in sections of society. Therefore, the task before the present generation is not merely to forget the past, but to learn from it and ensure that history does not become a barrier to the future.
The youth constitute the most powerful force for transforming society. With their education, energy, technological skills and aspirations, they can play a decisive role in taking Jammu and Kashmir towards greater prosperity. But this transformation requires an atmosphere where young people feel confident about their future and participate positively in the democratic and developmental process.
The idea of replacing walls with bridges is especially relevant. Walls—whether physical, social, political or psychological—create divisions, while bridges promote communication and understanding. Jammu and Kashmir needs more bridges between communities, regions and generations. Differences of opinion are natural in a democracy, but disagreement should never become an excuse for hatred, violence or exclusion.
The call for an inclusive Viksit Bharat is equally important. Development cannot be measured only through roads, buildings, industries or economic indicators. True development means ensuring that every section of society has access to education, healthcare, employment and opportunities. It also means creating a culture in which every citizen feels respected and has a stake in the nation’s progress.
For Jammu and Kashmir, the youth must become ambassadors of peace, innovation and progress. Instead of allowing social media misinformation, divisive narratives or outdated grievances to influence their thinking, they should use technology and education to create opportunities and strengthen social harmony. Entrepreneurship, skill development, sports, tourism, agriculture and the digital economy offer immense possibilities.
The past cannot be changed, but the future can certainly be shaped. The responsibility lies not only with governments but with every citizen, particularly the younger generation. Jammu and Kashmir has an opportunity to move beyond the divisions and disappointments of yesterday and build a future defined by confidence and cooperation. |
