8/22/2026 10:22:42 PM
Early Times Report

Lucknow, Aug 22: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assured the people of the state that there is no shortage of sugar in the state and therefore, the general public need not worry at all. At present, 179.38 lakh quintals of sugar are available in the state’s sugar mills. Sugar mills sold 235 lakh quintals of sugar during the two months of June and July. CM Yogi directed that sugar mills be operated from October 15 if required.
In the review meeting, the Chief Minister said, “23.60 lakh quintals of sugar are available in cooperative sugar mills, 5.28 lakh quintals in corporation sugar mills and 150.50 lakh quintals in private sugar mills, taking the total availability in the state to 179.38 lakh quintals. In addition, sugar mills sold 235 lakh quintals of sugar in June and July, most of which is still available in the open market. Sugar mills should be operated from October 15 if required.”
CM Yogi appealed to the general public to beware of those spreading rumors by claiming that there is a shortage of sugar. The Chief Minister directed administrative officials to take strict action against those indulging in sugar black marketing and spreading rumors.
In accordance with the directions of the Government of India, he said, “No dealer will store sugar stock for more than 30 days, and they cannot hold more than 400 tonnes of stock at a time. Bulk consumers, who consume 10 metric tonnes per month, also cannot hold more than 15 days’ stock. Sugar mills too will not keep sugar sold under their monthly quota in warehouses for more than 7 days from the date of sale.”
The Chief Minister directed all District Magistrates to get physical verification conducted of the warehouses of all registered sugar mills, wholesalers and retailers in their respective districts and obtain reports on the actual stock available. Strict action should be taken against those holding stock beyond the prescribed limit or indulging in hoarding. Continuous monitoring should be maintained over the availability and price of sugar in the district, and the government should be informed immediately in case of any artificial shortage or price rise.
It was informed in the meeting that 28.14 lakh hectares of sugarcane area is expected for the 2026-27 crushing season. This is expected to result in sugar production of 90 lakh tonnes. The estimated monthly sugar consumption in Uttar Pradesh is around 4 lakh tonnes. During the 2025-26 crushing season, more than ₹32,554 crore was also paid to 48 lakh farmers.
