| Call For Greater Outreach | | | Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha while chairing the Annual General Meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society, J&K UT, called for greater outreach in far-flung and border areas and stressed on the need to strengthen its humanitarian role and expand its activities.
The main aim of the Red Cross during all these years has been to ensure that timely assistance and essential services reach vulnerable and needy sections of society across Jammu Kashmir. It has succeeded in its endeavour to a large extent.
The Indian Red Cross Society has long stood as a symbol of compassion in areas where difficult terrain, harsh weather conditions, natural disasters and the geographical remoteness of several habitations can create serious challenges, the role of the Red Cross assumes even greater significance.
Over the years, the Red Cross has worked with the central objective of ensuring that timely assistance and essential services reach vulnerable and needy sections of society across Jammu and Kashmir. Its contribution during emergencies, disasters and other difficult circumstances has helped countless people. To a considerable extent, it has succeeded in fulfilling its humanitarian mandate. Yet, changing circumstances demand that its reach and capabilities continue to expand.
Jammu and Kashmir has a unique geographical landscape. Border villages, mountainous areas and remote settlements frequently face disruptions caused by heavy snowfall, landslides, floods, cloudbursts and other natural emergencies. In such situations, the first few hours can be critical. A stronger Red Cross network at the grassroots level can make a significant difference by ensuring that essential medicines, food, clothing, first-aid facilities and other relief material reach affected families without unnecessary delay.
Greater outreach should also mean greater community participation. Local volunteers can be trained in first aid, disaster response, blood donation mobilisation and emergency preparedness. Establishing stronger volunteer networks in border and remote areas would allow the organisation to respond faster while also creating a culture of community resilience. The Red Cross can further expand its humanitarian activities among elderly people, persons with disabilities, economically weaker families and other vulnerable groups. Regular health camps, blood donation drives, awareness programmes and emergency preparedness initiatives can strengthen its presence beyond crisis situations. Humanitarian service should ideally be continuous rather than activated only when disaster strikes. |
