Early Times Report NEW DELHI, Aug 31: The UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC), Pondicherry University, is organising a Residential Short-Term Programme on "Advances in Physical Education, Sports Sciences and Yoga" from 31 August to 5 September 2026 at Pondicherry University. The programme aims to provide faculty members and academic professionals with an opportunity to update their knowledge and skills in contemporary developments in physical education, sports sciences and yoga, while promoting holistic approaches to health, fitness and well-being in higher education. The inaugural programme was held on 31 August 2026 at the UGC-MMTTC, Pondicherry University. The programme commenced with registration, followed by the welcome address delivered by Prof. P. G. Arul, Director (i/c), UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre, Pondicherry University. Prof. Arul highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the UGC-MMTTC in organising innovative and insightful programmes and its contribution to the capacity building of faculty members, staff and research scholars in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047. Dr. W. Vinu, Course Coordinator, Department of Physical Education and Sports, Pondicherry University, presented the scope of the programme and highlighted the relevance of emerging developments in physical education, sports sciences and yoga. The presidential address was delivered by Prof. P. Prakash Babu, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry University. In his address, Prof. Babu emphasised the vital role of physical education, scientific sports training and yoga in promoting holistic human development. He observed that, in the context of sedentary lifestyles, excessive screen time and growing stress, physical activity and mental well-being must become integral components of education. Prof. Babu explained that modern sports science has evolved into an interdisciplinary field integrating physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, neuroscience, data analytics and technology to enhance athletic performance. Referring to the inspiring achievements of Indian sportspersons at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where India won six medals, he highlighted the importance of talent, discipline, systematic coaching and scientific performance analysis. He described yoga as India's invaluable contribution to global health and wellness and stated that it should be subjected to rigorous scientific research to explore its applications in stress management, cognitive health, sports performance, rehabilitation, healthy ageing and preventive healthcare. Linking the programme with the national vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, he stressed that a developed India must be supported by a healthy, physically active, mentally resilient and productive population. |
