| Planting trees in the wrong places is not a climate solution | | | Dr. Vijay Garg
Planting trees is widely regarded as one of the simplest and most effective ways to fight climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, provide shade, protect soil and support biodiversity. However, the idea that planting more trees everywhere is automatically good for the climate is too simplistic. Where trees are planted, which species are chosen and what ecosystem they replace matter greatly. Forests are complex ecosystems, not simply collections of trees. Grasslands, savannas, wetlands, shrublands and natural open landscapes also play important roles in maintaining biodiversity, storing carbon and regulating water. Turning every open landscape into a plantation can damage the very ecological systems that climate action is supposed to protect. One major concern is the replacement of naturally open ecosystems with dense tree plantations. Grasslands and savannas support many plants, insects, birds and animals that depend on open habitats. Planting trees in such areas can reduce biodiversity and alter soil conditions. In some regions, trees can also consume significant amounts of groundwater, particularly when fast-growing or water-demanding species are planted. Another problem is the selection of inappropriate tree species. A plantation may look green and healthy, but a single-species plantation cannot provide the same ecological benefits as a diverse natural forest. Monocultures can be more vulnerable to pests, diseases, drought and fire. They may also provide limited habitat for wildlife. Water is another critical factor. Trees need water to grow. In areas where water is already scarce, large-scale plantations may increase pressure on rivers, streams and groundwater. This does not mean that trees are harmful; rather, it means that tree planting must be matched with local water availability and ecological conditions. There is also a difference between planting trees and restoring forests. A natural forest develops over many years through interactions among trees, shrubs, grasses, fungi, insects, birds and animals. A plantation, even when it contains thousands of trees, may not reproduce this complexity. Protecting existing natural forests is often more valuable than planting new trees where forests did not naturally occur. Climate benefits also depend on permanence. Trees store carbon as they grow, but that carbon can return to the atmosphere if forests are destroyed by logging, fire, drought or disease. Climate strategies therefore need long-term protection and management rather than focusing only on the number of saplings planted. The solution is not to stop planting trees. Instead, we need smarter tree planting. Native species should generally be preferred, and planting should be based on ecological research. Degraded forests should be restored, existing forests should be protected, and natural grasslands, wetlands and other valuable ecosystems should not be converted simply because trees appear to offer an easy climate solution. Governments, communities and environmental organisations should therefore measure success not merely by the number of trees planted, but by their survival, ecological value, biodiversity benefits, water impact and long-term carbon storage. Climate action requires more than counting saplings. It requires understanding landscapes. The right tree in the right place can be a powerful climate solution. The wrong tree in the wrong place can create new environmental problems. The future of afforestation should therefore be guided not by the slogan “plant more trees everywhere,” but by a more thoughtful principle: protect nature, restore degraded ecosystems and plant trees where trees truly belong.
