| Shri Guru Ravi Dass Birth anniversary celebrated at Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 17: While speaking on this occasion Sham Lal Basson Gen Secy and former councilor said that E V Ramaswami was born in 1879 in the district of Erode in then Madras in a rich family of Shudra caste.A great thinker EV Ramaswami became the unchallengeable mass leader.Periyar started independent Rationalist Self Respect Movement. He declared that the objectives of his group was to establish a castless society on the basis of principles of equality; a society where there shall be Superstitions, orthodoxy and social ill. With his tremendous pressure the Government of Madras started giving reservation in jobs for sc st obc in 1928-29. Later on it was stopped on the ground that this provision was not enshrined in the Constitution of India. E V Ramaswami started agitation and finally in 1951 first ammendment of the Constitution was made and clause (4) was inserted with the article 15 of the Constitution to provide reservation for the Backwards. Vaicom Satyagraha was a nonviolent agitation for access of downtrodden to Vaicom Temple in the kingdom of Travancore and E V Ramaswami Naicker was Hero of this movement. The kingdom of Travancore was known for its rigid and oppressive caste system and Swami Vivekanand called it as 'Lunatic asylum' Basson further said that in Vaicom, a small town in Kerala State, then Travancore, there were strict Laws of untouchability in and around the temple. The Dalits were not allowed in close streets leading to temples. As a Rationalistic and ardent social reformer, Pariyar advocated forcibly throughout his life that woman should be given their legitimate position in society as the equal of men, that they should be provided good education and should have right to property. He was strictly against dowry system and Devdasi system. Periyar E V Ramaswami Naicker was rightly called by the people, " Thanthai" the father.He was given title, 'Periyar; the great. The UNESCO honoured him with decoration. The citation reads: "Periyar the prophet of new age, the Socrates of the South East Asia, Father of the Social Reforms Movement, arch enemy of ignorance, Superstitions meaningless customs and base manners. Thanthai Periyar lived a very long life of ninety four years and three months and he struggled against slavery till his last breath, completely hale and hearty. The struggle which he started eighty four years ago, while he was only a boy of ten got great success in Tamil Nadu.He desired humanity to establish a society based on economic, social, political justice, virtues and ideals, rationale and principles of equality. |
