JAMMU, Sept 18: Under the able guidance of Honourable Vice-Chancellor Prof. B. N. Tripathi, Division of Microbiology, Faculty of Basic Sciences, Chatha, and the Division of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, R.S. Pura, jointly celebrated International Microorganism Day 2026 at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu. The programme was organised on the theme "Microbes for Life, Health and a Sustainable Planet". Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu, was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Sanjay Guleria, Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences, hosted the programme. The event was coordinated by Dr. Brajeshwar Singh, Head, Division of Microbiology, and Dr. Pankaj Goswami, Head, Division of Microbiology and Immunology. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Gupta highlighted the critical role of microorganisms in sustainable agriculture, animal and human health, environmental protection and industrial biotechnology. He emphasized the need to strengthen research and innovation in microbiology and encouraged students and scholars to explore the potential of beneficial microorganisms for addressing emerging agricultural and environmental challenges. Heads of Divisions, faculty members and students from both Faculties participated in the celebration, which highlighted the diverse applications of microorganisms in agriculture, healthcare, industry and environmental sustainability, including biofertilizers, plant growth promotion, pharmaceuticals, industrial enzymes, bioremediation and biofuels. The celebrations featured Scientific Presentation, Scientific Poster Presentation and Agar Art competitions. Ms. Vironika, secured first position in Agar Art; Ms. Shivani Thakur, in Scientific Presentation; and Mr. Drishant, in Scientific Poster Presentation. The programme concluded with an emphasis on the vital role of microorganisms in advancing health, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Dr. Sneahpreet Kour conducted the proceedings, while Dr. Upma Dutta proposed the vote of thanks. |
