| Rare Adrenal Tumour removed through advanced Keyhole Surgery at Pediatric Surgery department GMC Jammu | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 20: In a significant achievement in the field of advanced pediatric minimally invasive surgery, the Department of Pediatric Surgery, SMGS Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, successfully performed a rare and complex laparoscopic adrenal tumour surgery in a 14-year-old girl.
The young patient had been suffering from abdominal pain and loose stools for some time. Following detailed clinical evaluation and investigations, she was found to have a large adrenal gland tumour. Considering the complexity of the condition, the child was evaluated and stabilized through a multidisciplinary approach.
The child underwent laparoscopic keyhole, removal of the adrenal tumour. The technically demanding procedure lasted approximately three hours and was completed successfully through minimally invasive access. Following the surgery, the child was shifted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for close monitoring and postoperative care. The child made a good recovery following the procedure and was discharged on the sixth postoperative day. She continues to remain under follow up and is doing well.
The complex minimally invasive procedure was performed by the team of Pediatric Surgeons lead by Dr Saalim Nazki and assisted by Dr Akshat Sudhanshu (Assistant Professor); Dr Priyanka Koushal (Registrar); Dr Kranti (PG); and Mr Eric Teji (OT Assistant).
Speaking about the achievement, Dr Saalim Nazki, who is also Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, GMC Jammu, said that the successful surgery was an important achievement for the department as well as GMC Jammu. He highlighted that adrenal tumours of this nature are extremely rare in the pediatric population with less than 10 cases reported in children below 16 years of age throughout the world.
He further explained that the tumour in this child was large and technically challenging, yet was successfully removed using a laparoscopic approach, avoiding a large conventional surgical incision. He emphasized that adrenal tumours can be particularly delicate and challenging to handle during surgery, and meticulous surgical and anaesthetic management is essential to minimize potential risks.
Dr Nazki also appreciated the Anaesthesia team, which played a crucial role in the successful management of the case. The anaesthetic team was led by Dr Arti Mahajan, Associate Professor, and Dr Abhilasha Gupta, Assistant Professor, along with their team, under the leadership of Prof Rakesh Mahajan (Head Department of Anaesthesia GMC Jammu).
He also acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Department of Pediatrics, SMGS Hospital, for its clinical inputs and multidisciplinary support under the headship of Prof Sanjeev Digra. In addition, a high appreciation was given to Department of Pathology headed by Prof Jyotsna Suri and her team to identify such an extremely rare tumor.
Dr Nazki expressed his gratitude to the GMC Jammu administration for its continued support in strengthening advanced pediatric surgical services. He particularly appreciated the support of Prof Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, GMC Jammu, and Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital. The successful completion of this complex laparoscopic adrenal tumour surgery represents another step forward in the development of advanced pediatric minimally invasive surgical services at GMC Jammu, providing children in the region access to specialized surgical care using modern techniques. |
