Budgam, Sept 26: Prominent political activist and former Vice Chairman of J&K Cements, Er. Nazir Ahmad Yatoo, today visited several villages in the Charar-i-Sharief area and interacted with residents over issues affecting their daily lives.
A major concern raised by residents was the burden of accumulated electricity dues, with many households reporting bills of 30,000–40,000 or even higher. Residents urged the government to provide relief through an amnesty mechanism, particularly for poor and economically weaker families.
Yatoo said that labourers, small earners and low-income households are finding it extremely difficult to clear such large bills amid limited employment and rising household expenses.
He appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Power portfolio, to consider extending the Power Amnesty Scheme for genuine needy consumers across Jammu and Kashmir.
“People are ready to pay their dues, but many poor families simply cannot afford to clear 30,000–40,000 in one go. A targeted amnesty can provide breathing space to families while also helping the Power Department recover its outstanding dues,” Yatoo said.
Yatoo stressed that the issue is not limited to Charar-i-Sharief but is being faced by financially vulnerable consumers across the Valley, and urged the government to adopt a compassionate and practical approach. |
