| J&K Police issue New Advisory, appeal to families to remain alert | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 3: In light of the rising number of incidents where cybercriminals target senior citizens, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have issued a new advisory to alert citizens. The police have urged families to play an active role in ensuring the digital safety of the senior members in their homes. Sharing details about this police initiative, Pardeep Sharma, the Publicity Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for Jammu South district, stated that citizens have been appealed to teach their elderly family members how to identify suspicious calls, messages, and online fraud tactics. Rising Threat of “Digital Arrest” and Investment Fraud This advisory specifically highlights the growing threats of “digital arrest” and fake online investment schemes. Cybercriminals often intimidate and threaten senior citizens by posing as law enforcement officials or representatives of government agencies. Since elderly people are generally less familiar with technology and digital platforms, they easily fall prey to these fraudsters. Maintain Family Communication: Have open conversations with the senior members of your household. Encourage them to immediately inform the family instead of taking independent decisions if they receive any suspicious call or demand for money. Increase Digital Literacy: Younger members of the family should take out time to teach the elderly basic cyber safety skills and how to identify online fraud. |
