| Another milestone achieved by Deptt of Cardiology, Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 5: The Department of Cardiology, Superspeciality Hospital, Government Medical College, Jammu, has achieved another significant milestone with the successful first implantation of an AVEIR VR leadless pacemaker in the department. The case was particularly challenging. The patient had previously undergone pacemaker implantation at another centre on the left side, which was complicated by device infection. A second pacemaker was subsequently implanted on the right side, which again developed infection. The patient was therefore left without a permanent pacemaker. The patient presented with complete heart block (CHB), recurrent syncope and episodes of asystole and was initially managed with a temporary transvenous pacemaker (TPI) as a lifesaving measure. In view of the history of recurrent pacemaker-related infections and the need for permanent pacing, the patient underwent successful implantation of an AVEIR VR leadless pacemaker. Unlike conventional pacemakers, the AVEIR VR is a leadless pacing system implanted directly within the heart, without the need for a subcutaneous generator pocket or a transvenous pacing lead. This makes leadless pacing an important option in appropriately selected patients, particularly those with a history of recurrent device-related infections. The procedure was performed by the Cardiology Unit team, comprising Professor Dr Dharminder Kumar and Professor Dr Sanjeev Bhat, under the expert supervision and guidance of Dr Sudhansu Sekhar Parida, Fortis Hospital, New Delhi, along with the entire supporting Cardiology and Cath Lab team. This successful procedure marks an important advancement in the cardiac pacing services at SSH, GMC Jammu, and reflects the department's commitment to providing advanced, minimally invasive cardiac care to patients in the region. |
