| School of Mathematics, SMVDU organizes a guest lecture | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 10: School of Mathematics, SMVDU, Katra organized a guest lecture on "The Descent of Learning: Gradient-Based Optimization from Cauchy to Contemporary Data Science" which was delivered by Dr. Anupam Yadav, Associated Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics and Computing, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar, Punjab. At the outset, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Associated Professor & Head, School of Mathematics welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speaker. The proceedings of the event were conducted by Ms. Humma Javed Sheikh (research scholar). The lecture was attended by the students from the Programmes like B. Tech. Mathematics and Computing, FYUP (Mathematics), M.Sc. Mathematics, and Ph.D. Dr. Yadav explained that every time when we use Google Maps, scroll YouTube, unlock your phone with your face or chat with an AI, a computer is solving an optimization problem. Behind almost all of these sits one simple idea: find which way is downhill, take a small step, and repeat. This idea is called gradient descent. The French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy wrote it down in 1847. In this lecture, he demonstrated that how this idea grew into the engine of modern machine learning. He discussed the concepts from Fermat and Newton, through the wartime planning problems of the 1940s, to neural networks, the Netflix Prize and today's large language models. Apart from his interesting lecture on "The Descent of Learning", he interacted with students and answered their queries related to internships, placements etc. During this lecture, all the faculty members of the School were also present. Prof. (Dr.) Pragati Kumar, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, SMVDU congratulated the "Team School of Mathematics" for organizing this wonderful lecture. |
