| Bharat Priye seeks immediate assessment of crop losses caused by rain, hailstorms | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 17: Chairman of the JKPCC Kissan Congress, Bharat Priye, today urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to immediately constitute special assessment teams and direct the concerned Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to assess the extensive damage caused to agricultural and horticultural crops by heavy rainfall and hailstorms across Jammu and Kashmir. Expressing serious concern over the plight of farmers, Priye said the adverse weather conditions had reportedly caused substantial damage to standing crops, orchards and other horticultural produce, threatening the livelihoods of farming families who depend on agriculture for their survival. He stressed that the administration must act without delay and ensure that field-level assessments are undertaken in all affected areas. The concerned Deputy Commissioners should be directed to coordinate with the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, revenue officials and other relevant agencies to conduct a comprehensive and transparent assessment of the losses suffered by farmers. Priye said timely assessment was essential to determine the actual extent of damage and enable the government to provide appropriate relief and compensation to affected farming families. He emphasised that any delay in conducting surveys or processing relief claims could further aggravate the financial difficulties of farmers already facing uncertainty due to unpredictable weather conditions. He urged the government to ensure that assessment teams visit affected villages, orchards and agricultural fields rather than relying solely on preliminary reports. The survey, he said, should cover both agricultural and horticultural losses, with due consideration given to the nature and extent of damage in each affected area. The Kissan Congress chairman appealed to the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister to personally intervene and ensure close monitoring of the assessment process. He called for appropriate relief measures based on verified reports and the applicable government norms, along with effective coordination among the district administrations and concerned departments. Priye maintained that farmers play a vital role in sustaining Jammu and Kashmir's rural economy and food security, and their losses must receive urgent attention from the administration. He said the government should stand firmly with affected farming families during this difficult period and ensure that genuine beneficiaries receive timely assistance through a transparent and farmer-friendly mechanism. Priye reiterated that immediate surveys, prompt decisions and effective delivery of relief were necessary to prevent weather-related crop damage from turning into a prolonged economic crisis for farmers across the Union Territory. |
