| Ladakh makes judicial history as HC Bench begins regular hearings at Leh | | | Early Times Report
Leh, Oct 21: A historic chapter in India’s judicial history unfolded on Wednesday as the Ladakh Bench of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh commenced regular hearings at Leh, marking a significant milestone in bringing justice closer to people in remote and geographically challenging regions. Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Dr. Pushpendra Singh Bhati, and Justice Sanjay Parihar presided over the first regular Division Bench proceedings at the newly established Ladakh Bench, situated at an altitude of over 11,500 feet above sea level. The day began with the hearing of five listed matters before the Division Bench. The Chief Justice participated through virtual mode, while Justice Sanjay Parihar was physically present at the Ladakh Bench. Following the conclusion of the Division Bench proceedings, Justice Parihar conducted hearings in 60 matters listed before the Single Bench. The proceedings incorporated a hybrid hearing arrangement, combining virtual and physical participation to facilitate the smooth commencement of regular judicial work at the high-altitude location. Justice Sanjay Parihar said that the identification and listing of 65 cases reflected the initial efforts to organise and facilitate hearings for litigants from Ladakh. He described the commencement of regular judicial proceedings as a landmark achievement in the country’s judicial infrastructure and reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that geographical barriers do not obstruct access to justice. The establishment of the Ladakh Bench is expected to significantly strengthen access to the High Court for residents of Leh, Kargil and other far-flung areas of the Union Territory. Earlier, litigants often had to undertake lengthy journeys to Srinagar or Jammu to pursue their cases before the High Court. The commencement of regular hearings is also a major development for the legal fraternity of Ladakh, particularly advocates and litigants who will now benefit from judicial proceedings closer to their region. It may be recalled that the Ladakh Bench of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh was formally inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, on October 18, 2026, at Melongthang in Leh. The start of regular hearings marks an important step towards strengthening the presence of constitutional institutions in remote regions and making justice more accessible to the people of Ladakh. |
