| Domestic Defence System | | | India has been focusing on building a robust domestic defence ecosystem. The emphasis has been on developing indigenous military capabilities that are essential to effectively deal with national security challenges. While addressing a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the defence ministry in Jaisalmer, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the government has been boosting the domestic defence industry as part of efforts to reduce the country's strategic dependence on foreign sources. He stressed on the need for the military to remain prepared to combat emerging challenges. For decades, India relied heavily on imports to meet its defence requirements. While international cooperation remains important, excessive dependence on foreign suppliers can create vulnerabilities, particularly during conflicts or geopolitical crises. Delays in the supply of spare parts, ammunition and advanced equipment can adversely affect operational readiness. Indigenous manufacturing, therefore, is not simply an economic objective but a strategic necessity. The government's initiatives to encourage domestic defence production, promote research and development, and involve private enterprises have opened new opportunities for Indian manufacturers. Public sector undertakings, private companies, startups and research institutions must work collectively to strengthen this ecosystem. Self-reliance should not be measured merely by the number of products manufactured domestically. The real test lies in developing advanced technologies, ensuring quality, reducing production costs and achieving global competitiveness. Equally important is the need to encourage young scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to contribute to the defence sector. A strong partnership between the armed forces, industry and research institutions can accelerate innovation and ensure that military requirements are addressed effectively. The government must also ensure that domestic manufacturers receive consistent policy support, timely payments and opportunities to compete. Quality and operational efficiency should remain the guiding principles of defence procurement. India's defence preparedness must remain above all considerations. National security is a collective responsibility, and every effort to strengthen the armed forces deserves sustained support. The vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence is both ambitious and necessary. A self-reliant defence industry will not only strengthen national security but also generate employment, promote technological innovation and enhance India's global standing. The military must remain prepared for emerging challenges. Achieving this objective requires continuous investment, innovation and determination. A nation that can equip and protect its armed forces through its own technological capabilities is better positioned to defend its sovereignty and pursue its strategic interests with confidence. |
