| NC turmoil: Ram Madhav asks BJP leaders to keep close watch on rebel MLAs | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 3: Although BJP national vice-president Ram Madhav has maintained a guarded silence on the internal rift within the ruling National Conference (NC), local party leaders have reportedly been asked to keep a close watch on all developments. Highly placed sources within the BJP said that during a closed-door meeting with senior party leaders, Madhav asked them to closely monitor the unfolding developments within the ruling National Conference. "Ram Madhav asked party leaders to keep track of the activities of disgruntled MLAs who were reportedly present at the lunch hosted by Qaiser Jamsheed Lone on October 30," sources said. According to reports, a meeting of disgruntled NC MLAs was held on October 30, 2026, at Lone's residence in the Friends Colony area of Srinagar. Although party leaders and some participants downplayed the gathering as a routine lunch or a customary 'Dawat', it reportedly provided a platform for 17 to 20 disgruntled legislators to air their grievances and issue an ultimatum to the party leadership following the recent Cabinet expansion. Sources further said that Madhav had assigned some BJP leaders the task of informally establishing communication with these disgruntled legislators without involving the party organisation. However, BJP sources maintained that the party had decided against taking any hasty steps to establish direct contact with the disgruntled NC MLAs. "Instead of reaching out to these legislators at this stage, the BJP has decided to adopt a wait-and-watch policy and allow the situation to unfold further," sources said. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Jammu, Madhav avoided making any direct comments on the ongoing infighting within the ruling National Conference or the resignation of Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi. He, however, remarked that Ruhullah was holding a rally with the blessings of "our people", while asserting that the ruling party in Jammu and Kashmir was visibly divided. He also maintained that the BJP had no involvement in the NC's internal affairs. "I would not like to comment on the matter, but the National Conference is visibly divided today. Ruhullah is holding the rally today with the blessings of our people," Madhav told reporters during the press conference. Madhav, who played a key role in the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir in 2015, is on a day-long visit to Jammu. During his visit, he held a closed-door meeting with senior BJP leaders at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar. His visit comes amid reports of growing resentment among NC legislators following Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's recent Cabinet expansion. Madhav sought to distance the BJP from the internal developments within the NC, maintaining that statements made by BJP legislators did not necessarily reflect the party's official position. "Let me reiterate that we have no involvement in the internal affairs of the National Conference. Whatever statements our MLAs make are a separate matter. This is entirely an internal matter of the NC, and its leaders are fighting among themselves," he said. "Today, one of their own MPs has come out and is holding a programme. That is their internal affair. What do we have to do with it?" he added. Asked about possible future political developments and their implications, Madhav declined to speculate, saying that the situation would have to unfold before any conclusions could be drawn. "Yes, all bridges are crossed when you reach them," he remarked. |
