| Court asks govt to shift separatists retainees from Jammu | | | Early Times Report Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Thursday asked state administration to consider within two weeks the shifting of separatist leaders from Jammu to Srinagar. Justice Sunil Hali (vocational judge), who had reserved the judgment Tuesday, asked state administration to consider the shifting of seven detainee presently lodged in Jammu jails to Srinagar within a span of two weeks. The directions were passed on the petition, pleading for transfer of seven persons, including separatist leaders, detained under the Public Safety Act and lodged in Jammu, to Srinagar. Senior Hurriyat conference (M) leader and chairman of Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmad Shah, chairperson of Dukhtaran Millat (daughters of faith) Asiya Andrabi, Mulism league chairman Masrat Alam Bhat and Dukhtaran activist Fahmeeda Sofi were shifted to Jammu jails recently. Barring Masrat Alma, the others were arrested for protesting against the Shopian incident involving twin rape and murder of Asiya (17) and her pregnant housewife sister-in-law Nelofer allegedly by uniformed men. Pertinently, in his argument, the counsel for the petitioners, Mian Qayoom, who is also the president of Kashmir High Court Bar Association, had argued that the government had violated a Supreme Court judgment of 1982. Qayoom argued that the state had booked the petitioners for protesting against Shopian incident, which was a violation of democratic norms. The petition had been filed by three private citizens, who have been issued notices by the court. Meanwhile, the court has also directed the administration to respond to the petition challenging the detention of the detainees under Public Safety Act.
