| Kashmir based transporters threaten strike | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jun 25 : Jammu and Kashmir Goods Transport Companies Association (GTCA) has threatened to launch an indefinite strike from July 1 in support of their demands. Besides other demands, the GTCA said all vehicle carrying goods for Kashmir valley should be searched and charged tax at Lower-Monda instead at Lakhanpur check post. The association also demanded finding of the traders instead of transporters in case of any irregularities, reinstatement of cancelled licenses, waiving off unnecessary penalty imposed on them and withdrawal of cases registered against some transporters in the Crime Branch. It also demanded a stop in increment of license fees and closure of all illegal cargo companies operating in the valley. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah released Rs 5 crore for Toll Plaza coming up at Lakhanpur on modern lines to streamline traffic and help smoothen collection of toll, a spokesman said here today. He said the Lakhanpur Toll Plaza project was approved on January 31, 2006 and in the first instance, an amount of Rs 3.50 crore was released for its construction and subsequently Rs 10 crore was released during 2007-08. In order to speed up construction work and help its early completion, the Chief Minister approved release of another Rs 5 crore for the project. On completion, all the import activities would be shifted from old Toll Centre to the New Plaza which will have adequate and modern facilities for parking of trucks and vehicles, weighbridges, resting places for drivers, sanitation and recreational facilities for tourists, he added.
