By: Khushwant. S. Ranial
There was a time when education was inculcated, imported and disseminated for the purpose of imbibing rich cultural, ethical, aesthetical, spiritual and moral values to the taught in the society. Its sole objective was to comprehend the past historical literary information to the upcoming generation about one’s own society and social milieu and civilization legacy aboding around the globe. Its main aim was also to keep abreast the knowledge of historical events, incidents of the past to the upcoming generations with the passage of time. But as the time passed and years rolled over, the increasing unabated pollution growth changed the demands of the society. A social awareness arose the gain and access to education for colourful, enjoyable, knowledgeable living among the masses. The demand of society changed with the passage of time and in order to achieve higher education, new avenues were searched and lot of efforts were pumped in this regard. Newer a Newer courses beyond were put into practice with the result that outdated humanities and social sciences courses were equally over added with new edition of courses pertaining to computer, information technology, management, tourism industry, space technology and even in Hotel and Hospital management like courses, A big boom arrived in the educational market to cater to the needs of job seekers. But Alas, despite all such best efforts, there has been observed almost a total chaos with every passing years, rate of suicides have increased at an alarming proportion forcing every concerned planner, intellectual seekers and trend setter to explore the new vistas of learning that could afford a sizable opportunity to every educated individual to gain employment opportunities in his near future for sustaining a healthy life of respectable nature so as reduce depression.
Since we all are living in an age of materialism where there exists cut throat competition, so in order to achieve edu’d success, different means have been pursued both lawful and unlawful, relevant and irrelevant, justifiable and unjustiable. Theory holding slogan “Survival of the fittest” marks its presence. These individual who could manage their sources exploit the situation and rest become victim of the ill-equipped, corrupt nexus of the system. Thus to whom one should blame and fix the responsibility i.e., educator, educant, curriculum planner, examination system etc is still an answer to seek. The biggest irony is that every parent who at his own time failed to make a mark due to varying factors wants his words to accomplish their unfulfilled dreams and lay undue emphasis upon his young ones at the cost of his/her personal wishes, likings, disliking, talent, potential and above all capacity to bear the stress/ strain and psychological as well as mental pressures. With the result, few make a headway under duress while other meekly surrender to the charm of seeking education. In this milea of gaining and loosing, and educand edges out and badly collapses. Those few who survives due to mouting familial motivational pressures banks on rate memory which stifles their creative outlook and passion and an analytical skill of assessing the true bent of mind of the educand is neatly killed. Not only this, even malpractices are adopted to achieve highest percentages, as actual competenance is often overlooked when an individual faces an interview board for the examination to get a job. Even, the evaluation system has failed to live upto the expectations of the general masses. The credibility of evaluation has lost its truthfulness beyond reparable measures as it has got severe criticism.
Curriculum has been over loaded in the recent past few years with new additions of books, chapters etc. The syallabi donot match with the average mental make up of the students of different classes. Unnecessary load of books been analysed as core concerned area of lackadaisical achievement of students. In gist, the demands of one’s mind and body doesnot suit to the over burdened class work. Under the given circumstances thus purpose and conceived goal of education to make every educand and society better qualitatively appears to have been missing in its form of current nature is the question of today. Very recently, Union Minister for HRD, Sh. Kapil Sibal held that an idea of uniform board at 12th class examination and dispensing with 10th class examination is being considered and floated this idea across different states and section of society but personally I opine that please stem the base and not the top of the education to get profitable dividends.
The urgent need of the hour is to place councilors, psychologists, psychiatrist, sociologists etc at every school. By the time an educand attains primary level education, his course of life should have been framed and chalked out based on his/ her skills, interests, activities, mental make up, physical growth & development, motor skills, co-curricular activities, liking and disliking, interests etc. keeping in light, the clubbed performance over the span of Ist five years schooling would offer an opportunity to evey individual to seek the education or next course of action pertaining one’s future. Such an adoption would automatically enhance the motivational interests and augment to promote the chance of gaining an access of education, games, other viable, related activities to scale newer heights of success, in the self chosen and driven scope of the life. Otherwise days are not far off that presence existing system of education would collapse one day.
