Poor civic amenity forces people to block Rajouri-Poonch Highway
7/2/2009 11:19:30 PM
Early Times Report
Poonch, July 02- Thousands of people, including women and children, today held protest demonstration against poor civic amenities and demanding construction of roads leading to the town, the protesters also blocked Rajouri-Poonch highway at Surankote for 10 hours.
Informed sources said that people numbering in thousands came on roads this morning to protest against bad conditions of lanes, drains and roads in and around Surankote town and disrupt traffic for about 10 hours.
During the day long protests, the vehicular moment in the area and the passengers Buses on way to Jammu had to wait till 3:30 pm as no traffic was allowed to pass the Surankote crossing by the people.
Bone of contention which led the representatives of Beopar Mandal who led the protest to block the Highway was delay in work of a road leading to Main Market.
“The road sanctioned by the government was to be constructed by the SAMPARK or BEACON but despite lapse of one year now they are no where”, alleged Mohammed Javaid.
“We have been approaching the concerned officials but nothing despite assurances was done till now”, Mohammed Hanif said and added that during rainy days it is very difficult for the residents to walk through the streets as these narrow drains get blocked. Government has been claiming better road connectivity and civic facilities to the people of the border district and its towns but all that seems a political stunt and mare eye wash for the people.
“No work was taken up in the town and crores are being spent in other districts either in the name of prime minister’s package or border funds”, said another villager.
The protestors had also held a three hour-long demonstration at the main Chowk in the town yesterday, the sources said.
The protest Dharna which was organized by Beopar Mandal Surankote was lifted following the assurances given by the District Commissioner Poonch.
