| HAWS expedition to MT Stok Kangri | | | Early Times Report Udhampur, Jul 2- High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), being a pioneer institution in the field of mountaineering, has achieved yet another feat by successfully summiting the peak of STOK KANGRI (6240 M / 20473 Ft) after a span of 20 years. This beautiful and challenging peak stands tall in the Stok region of Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. The peak has always been a charm amongst the mountaineers from across the world. Peak has its reputation for final pitch to summit where the accumulation of snow makes it challenging for the climbers in subzero temperatures. From the Base Camp which is at 5000 ft it is a climb of 15,473 ft for which two or three more camps are established depending on the glacier and the level of snow enroute. Two waves of `White Devils’ of HAWS led by Captain Akshay Dogra and Captain Mirza Zahid Begh respectively, summitted the peak on June 30 and July 1, 2009 respectively. It is one of the rarest moments when as many as 103 climbers have reached the top in two days.
