Speaking at a meeting to monitor price and quality of essential items here today, the Divisional Commissioner said that Deputy Commissioner, Kathua would be asked to institute a mechanism to check the adulterated milk products from entering the state at Lakhanpur Toll Post. Director, CA&PD, Jammu, Deputy Controller, Weights and Measures, Health Officer, Jammu Municipality, representatives of Consumer Protection Organization, J&K and prominent citizens participated in the meeting. Regarding loss to consumers and government due to non-deposition of VAT by some Companies, Dr. Kotwal asked Director, CA&PD to ascertain the Companies and shopkeepers who are charging VAT from consumers but not depositing it with the government. Over the general consensus on adulterated milk being sold openly in Jammu, Jammu Municipality was directed to keep a regular check on the quality of milk and apart from issuing licenses to milk-sellers, I-cards should also be issued to licensed milk vendors. Health officer informed that despite having only one laboratory for checking the quality of milk samples, every effort would be made to ensure that poor and adulterated supplies are checked in Jammu Municipal limits. Coming down heavily on the use of domestic LPG cylinders by shopkeepers for commercial purposes, Dr. Kotwal said that special squads would be constituted to conduct random raids in the city and cease the domestic LPG cylinders being used by commercial establishments. The Director, CA&PD informed that the department has sought a list of shopkeepers using domestic LPG cylinders from the Gas Agencies to nab the defaulters. The citizens brought the matter of non-implementation of the decision in the earlier meeting that home delivery of LPG cylinders within Jammu Municipality would be made 100 percent. The Divisional Commissioner asked Municipality about the status of gold testing machine, upon which the Health officer informed that tenders for procuring the machine have been sought from different companies. He also asked Municipality to be stern against the growing encroachments by the rehris especially, during evening as it increases the pressure on roads and leads to congestion of footpaths and roadsides causing inconvenience to pedestrians.
