| Taj says Tawi reservoir to take off soon | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, JULY 02 -The Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-din on Thursday said that work on proposed irrigation reservoir on River Tawi would be taken up shortly. The proposed reservoir would help in maintaining constant water discharge of 700 cusec in Tawi Canal, augmenting the areas irrigated by Ranbir canal. The Tawi Canal is presently adding only 50 cusec water to the main canal due to depleted water flow in river Tawi in the backdrop of long spell of dry weather. Minister was addressing a meeting convened to discuss plan for augmentation of drinking water and irrigation facilities in Kandi areas of Jammu and its adjoining districts. The Minister said that the reservoir will serve twin purposes of maintaining constant water discharge in the feeding canal and also serve as an attraction for tourists entering Jammu city. Seeking suggestions of MLA’s and MLC’s, Mr. Taj asked the officers to consult the concerned MLA while formulating plan for a particular constituency. He said wider consultations would help in need-based development and check wastage of resources. Taking strong notice of complaints about digging of canal by Brick Kiln owners, the Minister directed the Chief Engineer, Irrigation to take legal action against the persons indulging in such acts. He said any one violating the Canal Act will not be spared as fiddling with canal water is a serious offence. Calling for maintaining transparency while issuing work tenders, the Minister said that a contractor who fails to start the tendered work within 12 days will loose the contract and the same shall go to next lowest bidder. The Public representatives highlighted the irrigation and drinking water problems of their respective areas and sought early redressal of the same. They urged for repair of defunct irrigation tubewells and proper maintenance of distributaries.
