Replacing CRPF: Additional police force needed
7/2/2009 11:29:10 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu July 2 : The state Government required at least 12 to 15 additional battalions of the police for replacing the CRPF and the Army from within the Kashmir valley.
A senior police officer today said "we have equipment but we do not have the required numerical strength to handle the law and order if the Army and the CRPF were withdrawn."
In reply to a question he said "yes we have 26 battalions of the Armed police but 50 per cent of the men of these battalions are on security duty, providing security to political leaders, legislators, former legislators, ministers, in service and retired bureaucrats."
Another police officer of the rank of IGP said that for handling the situation in the Kashmir valley "we need at least 10 additional battalions.”
He said that the paucity of the manpower cane be judged by the way the police authorities could spare two companies for replacing the CRPF in Baramullah town. He said that when the situation on Wednesday demanded calling out of troops it was not possible for the police to handle the situation through 140 men of the police.
The two police officers explain that whenever any security agency finds that its men are under tremendous threat use of excessive force as self-defense becomes inevitable. The officers said that dealing with public protests and rallies was less easy than fighting militants. They suggested that first of all the police should have sufficient number of men and better equipment and then the state Government could consider demilitarization.
The officers said that the idea of handing over law and order to the police was idea and for achieving success in this case more men be added to the force and immediate steps could be taken by way of reducing the size of security cover provided to political leaders and bureaucrats.
