| Heavy showers being mercury down by 8 degrees | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 2: Pre-monsoon showers have brought relief to the people in city of temples and other adjoining areas after rains brought down mercury by almost 8 to 10 degree Celsius on Thursday evening. In the winter capital, city dwellers, after bearing heat with extremely high temperature and massive power cuts and water shortage, came out of their houses to enjoy the rains. The delayed monsoons have brought worries about drought and economic woes to the country’s farmers. As per metrological department report, pre-monsoon showers in Jammu are expected to continue over the next two days. Suman Bhat, housewife, residing in Trikuta Nagar said that these rains have brought much relief to the people as we expected to this kind of rains much earlier. Though, last couple of days, the temperature remained normal with blowing of winds, but these pre-monsoon showers brought succor to the inhabitants. Rahul Mahajan, a student, said, these pre-monsoon showers brought much respite from heat and has brought down mercury by 8 degrees. The pre-monsoon showers are the indicators of arrival of full monsoon in coming week. Mahinder Singh, of SKAUST, Sher-e-Kashmir University, said that these are pre-monsoon showers and it will continue for next few days. The full monsoon will arrive in a week’s time. Today the max. temp. in Jammu city before the pre-monsoon showers was recorded at 37.0oC, and 21.60C minimum. After showers, it was around 29.00C, so brought down mercury by 8 degrees. It will have a good effect on agriculture as farmers were waiting for pre-monsoon showers, though it delayed by a week time. The right time of these pre-monsoon showers was 25th June. Till few days back, the heat was scorching even at night you could feel the hot air. If rains continue for three days and it will be recorded about 25mm of rainfall, that indicates the arrival of full monsoon, he added.
