| PDP reacts to Govt’s findings, asks for retrospective probe in Wakf affairs | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 3- Questioning the Chief Minister’s decision to order probe into alleged multi-crore scams in Waqaf Board during the last six years, the PDP Vice-president Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, described the decision ‘as a step to divert peoples’ attention from the real issues plaguing Kashmir’. Ansari, in a statement said that "there is nothing wrong in ordering a probe in any scam but why should the Chief Minister seek probe in the Waqaf affairs only during the last six years?" He said the decision of Omar Abdullah smacks "vindictiveness" on the part of the National Conference leadership. Ansari explained that the then PDP led coalition Government had constituted a new Waqaf Board, comprising 11 members, with Chief Minister as the ex-officio chairman of the Board which resulted in the National Conference losing control of the Board. Omar was now trying to "hit back", he added. He explained that when the Board was reconstituted in September 2003 the ordinance under J&K specified Waqafs and specified Waqaf Properties (Management and regulation) had provided for ban on the sale and transfer of movable and immovable assets and placed transactions with banks and financial institutions on hold. He said under such circumstances there would have been no scope for financial irregularities. Molvi Ansari wanted the commission to probe into the affairs of the Waqaf Board during the last 30 years to unearth series of multi-crore scams in the Board when it was under the control of the National Conference. He said the Board members then had swindled money and the Chief Minister should set up commission to inquire into the shady deals committed during the last 30 years.
