| Farmers upset over Govt drought relief plan | | | Early Times Report Udhampur, Nov 22- Succumbing to the farmers’ uproar and overweening public demand, the State government has off-late brought farming areas of Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban under the purview of drought-compensation and placed Rs. 71 crores at the disposal of Divisional Commissioners at Jammu and Kashmir, nonetheless, the farmer community is yet to relent. Voicing the concern and sentiments of farmers worst affected by the unseen drought in the aftermath of the government’s announcement, R. S. Pathania, a noted kissan leader, and himself an agriculturist, has pooh-poohed the Calamity Relief Fund Committee headed by Chief Secretary, for its lack of a state-of-art and pragmatic approach on the burning issue. He termed sanctioning 35 kgs of ration per family for three months as totally inadequate and impractical. There are families having fifty members and those having one or two members only. The State is not justified in treating unequal’s equally and paints all the cases with the same brush, irrespective of the respective loss suffered by each family. In order to save and stabilize the fractured economies of farmers, government has to resort to some practical work instead of harping on kid-glove treatments and half-hearted approaches. He further lamented that monsoon failure coupled by unprecedented price rise and rising unemployment in rural sectors have virtually broken the back of economies of the farmers thereby bringing them on brink of starvation. Therefore a reasonable cash dole accompanied with free three-month ration is also required to do full justice with the suffering farmers. He also reiterated the demand for inquiry into supply of and eaten-up maize seed (Kanchan-517 variety) and mash seed (PH-19 variety) by the Agriculture Department authorities. |
