| | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 7- A musical treat in the form of Mehfil-e-Qawwali awaits Jammuites at Abhinav theatre as world renowned Farid Sabri and party would perform at city of temples tomorrow. The party would be joined by another popular Athar Balpuri and party from Srinagar that is all likely to enthrall the audience on the occasion that would be presided over by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as the Chief Guest. Detailing over the function, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Zafar Iqbal Manhas said that the attempt envisaged by the Academy is to try for a collective performance of different genres on the same platform that may give the audience a valuable reason to distinguish the quality and performances of their respective best. Born in 1962, Farid Sabri Jaipuri is a gem of Indian classical music and has performed many musical concerts in United States, Australia and Gulf and is getting wide appreciation from all over the world. Qawwali, is the devotional music of the Sufis. Originally performed mainly in Sufi shrines throughout what is now India and Pakistan, it has also gained popularity in the mainstream, especially through the work of artists like Farid Sabri (Jaipuri). Qawwali is a vibrant musical tradition that stretches back more than 700 years. The roots of Qawwali can be traced back to 8th century Persia. However, Qawwali in the form we know it today was essentially created by Amir Khusrau in late 13th century in India.
