| Cropping potential, pattern discussed in Banihal | | | Early Times Report Ramban, Dec 17: Strategic Research Extension Plan (SREP) based on the valuable information/date about the scope of cultivation of various crops according to the topographical conditions of the district Ramban, was discussed in ATMA governing board meeting held under the chairmanship of the district development commissioner, Ramban, KB Magotra here today. The national resource person, of Manage, Hyderabad, Dr. GMP Gupta, made power presentation of strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats of the district. The DDC, hoped that the comprehensive document of SERT under ATMA will serve as a boom to face challenges and judiciously exploit the potential, natural resources and opportunities for ushering agriculture prosperity and betterment of farming community of the district. Calling the agriculture sector the mainstay of the rural population, the DDC said that the district has good potential for growing of cereals, fruits and vegetables besides rearing of animals. He also informed the quorum that Ramban district which is 80% hilly is well fertile for growing apple, plum, apricot, walnut and olive cultivation is mostly done in the this district. He also said that the major thrust lie on growing of Rabi crops as the moisture is readily available during the winter season and the summers are too hot that crops do not thrive well on the rain fed fields. Other enterprises which are of importance for this area sericulture, fishery, forestry by-products like banfsha, dhoop malthi, kakar singi, aloe vera etc. The meeting was attended by the chief planning officer, Ram Rattan, chief agriculture officer, AK Koul, Astt. Commissioner Development, Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, and allied agencies, like animal husbandry, scientists of KVK, NGO’s cooperative, progressive farmers and sheep husbandry etc.
