| Troops’ reduction plan kept on hold | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 9- Following series of militancy related violence, including the terrorist strike in Lal Chowk, the Government has decided to delay reduction of troops and the paramilitary forces in Jammu and Kashmir for the time being. Official sources today said that after 30,000 troops were withdrawn from Poonch and Rajouri belts in recent weeks, the Government had planned of sending more battalions of the Army and the paramilitary forces either back to the barracks or to areas outside the state. The sources said that after the recent incidents of violence and following reports that activists of Lashkar-i-Toiba were trying to hit more vital Government installations besides the security pickets and camps, a decision had been taken to keep in abeyance the plan of reducing security forces in the state. According to these sources, if militants attempted at kicking up bigger trouble by resorting to indiscriminate gun firing, grenade lobbing and IED blasts additional companies of security forces may be deployed in disturbed areas. Official sources said that the Ministry of Defence and Home have issued instructions to the troops and the BSF, guarding the LOC and the International Border, to remain on the alert for frustrating determined attempts by the militants to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir. The security forces have been directed to carry out round the clock patrolling on the border so that militants dare not intrude into the Indian Territory. Another instruction to the troops and the BSF is that they should immediately open fire whenever they spot movement of people on the zero line. The Government had plans of either revoking applicability of Armed Forcess Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in areas where the situation had improved or modifying it to suit the local conditions. But the recent incidents of violence may not now allow a scope for making any changed with the AFSPA.
