| Ceasefire violated twice in 10 hours; BSF jawan killed | | Amid Pak fire, ultras attack IB; blow up fencing in IED blasts | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 11: Pakistan's behaviour on borders is more of a frustrated cat scratching the pole. Stung by repeated failures to push militants into Jammu region from across the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC), it today violated the 1993 "ceasefire agreement" twice in an interval of 10 hours by opening fire in Kanhachak and firing rockets in Poonch. While at Kanhachak, militants came closer to the barbed-wire fencing under the cover of Pak-fire and attacked a forward area, besides blowing up a part of fencing in IED blasts; in Poonch sector where two rockets were fired, a BSF man was killed and another wounded critically. Police sources said the Pak Rangers from their New Chinore post resorted to heavy volume of fire on the BSF's forward Alpha Machail outpost in Kanhachak at about 12.30 am. The BSF returned the fire. However, taking cover of the Pak fire, militants came closer to the barbed-wire fencing and then tied an IED with a pillar. This IED exploded with a big-bang at about 1 am. Sources said the fence was damaged and few pillars on the side facing Pakistan were broken with the impact of the blast, which was followed by another explosion after few minutes. Militants also cut more than 10 barbed-wires at two places while attempting to intrude, the sources added. DIG BSF, Jammu Frontier, J B Sangwan admitted that the fence was damaged and cut at two places by the militants. It was a failed infiltration bid by militants whose attempts to breach the fencing were foiled by the alert BSF jawans who had taken positions on almost all the known infiltration routes, he added. Sources said when the troops started zeroing in on them, they fled back to Pakistan. The firing between the two sides continued upto about 1.30 am, the sources added, saying over 350 rounds were fired by the Rangers in one hour. Asked if it was a case of ceasefire violation by Pakistan, the DIG said he was not yet sure. Senior BSF and police officers rushed to the Alpha Machail area in the morning and inspected the spot where the fencing was damaged and cut.The night-vigil was further enhanced all along the IB, the sources added. Sangwan said a "flag meeting" was held also with the Pak Rangers this morning, but they as usual expressed their ignorance about the incident. Meanwhile, in the forward Kanari area of Sabzian in Poonch, two rockets were fired by Pak army at about 11.30 am. These exploded near the 9029 post of 86 Bn of BSF, resulting in the instant death of washerman Shoorveer Singh and splinter injuries to a BSF porter, who was hospitalised. When contacted, BGS (Media), Northern Command, Gurdeep Singh said the firing of rockets by Pakistan was a "clear case of ceasefire violation". A tight vigil was being maintained all along the LoC to foil any infiltration bid by the Pak-based militants, he added. Sources said since an unsuccessful infiltration bid was also made from Akhnoor sector Saturday, an alert was sounded on the Jammu-Akhnoor road. All vehicles coming from the border areas were being checked and pedestrians frisked, the sources added.
