| BSF raises strength to enhance vigil along J&K borders | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 14 : The Border Security Force has raised an ad hoc battalion of about 1,000 troops to further strengthen its security apparatus along the international border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir in view of increased infiltration bids from Pakistan. Intelligence agencies have sounded an alarm to the security forces regarding terrorist outfits, with active support of Pakistan Army and Rangers, making desperate attempts to push in trained militants stationed at various launch pads across the border.
In the past two weeks, BSF has foiled at least seven infiltration bids of militants besides recovering a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from some places close to the IB.
According to intelligence inputs, the infiltrators have shifted their focus from ‘’vulnerable tough mountainous terrains’’ to plains to sneak into this side of Jammu and Kashmir. Reports say about 80 to 100 trained militants are waiting at various bases for an opportune time to cross the IB in J&K.
‘’Rising to the occasion, the BSF has established a special ad hoc battalion of about 1,000 troops to strengthen its security apparatus along the 202-km-long IB, which stretches from Lakhanpur in Kathua district to Pallanwala sector in Jammu district,’’ a senior official of the security force told UNI.
‘’This new battalion, which has been raised out of additional troops available with the BSF’s Jammu Frontier, will be used to set up ad hoc border outposts between existing ones to reduce the gaps,’’ the official stated.
Besides, the BSF has engaged maximum of its troop strength to keep vigil along the border, particularly during night hours when infiltrators try to take advantage of the persisting cold wave and foggy weather conditions.
‘’Troop strength has been increased at vulnerable points, like water bodies and densely vegetated places, along the border to check possible attempts,’’ he said.
The BSF has also deployed new gadgets like night vision devices and thermal imagers to keep an eye on suspected movement along the IB.
In 2009, there were 435 infiltration attempts by militants from Pakistan side, which was nearly 92 more than the previous year.
Intelligence reports meanwhile said as many as 105 trained militants had managed to successfully infiltrate into this side of Jammu and Kashmir in 2009.
