19 lakh children covered in second round of Pulse polio-Immunization

JAMMU, Feb 7

Carrying forward the prestigious National Pulse Polio Immunization Programme, over 19 lakh children between age groups of 0 to 5 years were covered in the second round of Immunization in the entire State.
Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma launched the second round of campaign by administering Pulse Polio drops to the children at Primary Health Centre, Kote Bhalwal.
MLA Raipur-Domana, Bharat Bhushan, Director Family Welfare, Dr. Kulbushan Pandotra, Director Health Services, Jammu, Dr. Jasbir Singh, CMO, Jammu, Dr. Shahid Moghal, doctors, Para-medical staff, prominent citizens of the area were present on the occasion.
Seeking people’s support in making this programme a total success, the Minister said that “we have to create massive awareness among the masses especially in rural areas to educate them about the timely vaccinations the keep the children free from the dreaded diseases like Polio, Diphtheria, Measles, Tetanus, Whooping Cough and Tuberculosis etc”.
He said that diseases can strike, irrespective of religion, caste or creed, rich or poor, and we have to ensure that every child below the age of 5 years, including neo-natal get the polio drops. All these vaccinations including polio drops are given free at all Government Health Institutions across the State, said Sharma.
The Minister stressed upon the doctors, para-medical staff and others associated with the Pulse Polio Immunization Campaign to reach out to each child and make a minute monitoring to ensure that no child is left out without this essential immunization. He lauded the efforts of doctors, para-medics, social organizations, NGOs, para-military forces for their tireless efforts in this noble cause.
Giving details about the arrangements made for today’s campaign, the Minister said that Health Department has established 10516 Polio Booths, deployed 42064 workers and 2305 supervisors across the State.
Besides, the Department has distributed over 24 lakh Polio Vaccines for the second round of the Campaign to cover over 19 lakh children. First round of the Campaign was held in January this year which achieved hundred per cent targets, said the Health Minister.
MLA Bharat Bhushan also spoke on the occasion and thanked the Minister for launching the Pulse Polio Campaign from the Kote Bhalwal.
He put forth various demands pertaining to the Health Department which include upgradation of Primary Health Centre (PHC), Kote Bhalwal as Sub-District Hospital, establishing of Health Sub Centres at Marjali and Gurah Patan, augmentation of power supply and an additional Ambulance.
The Minister assured that all genuine demands would be looked into sympathetically and appropriate action taken in due course of time.
Minister for Medical Education R S Chib inaugurated the second round of Pulse Polio Campaign 2010 in SMGS Hospital, Jammu.
Chib emphasized the significance of Pulse Polio Campaign in prevention of this crippling disease in children which results in physical challenge for the children. He also highlighted the role of Polio Vaccine which could help in eliminating this evil in the society and was one of the gifts from the science.
He appealed to all the citizens to get their children between 0 to 5 years vaccinated with Polio Drops and make this campaign a grand success.
Principal and Dean, Government Medical College and Associated hospitals, Jammu Rajinder Singh, Administrator, Associated Hospitals, Jammu, T Angchuk, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital, Jammu Dr. Satish Sharma, Medical Superintendent, Medical College Hospital, Jammu Dr. Romesh Gupta, Dr. Aniece Chowdhary, HOD ENT, Dr. Shashi Gupta, HOD Gynae & Obst. Dr. G.S. Saini, Acting HOD Pediatrics along with other faculty members, nursing, para medical and Class-IV staff in large numbers attended this function.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Health and Medical Education, Javid Ahmad Dar, administered Pulse Polio drops children at Gandhi Nagar Hospital Jammu.
The Minister was accompanied by Medical Superintendent and other functionaries of the hospital.
The Minister was informed that about 19 lakh children would be provided these drops across the State, for which 42,064 workers have been deployed along with 2,305 supervisors in 10,516 polio booths.
The Minister directed Director Health services, Jammu, to launch also door to door campaign for Pulse Polio immunization so that no children are left out.
Plus Polio camp organized at Bhaderwah Campus
The Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu in collaboration with District health department Doda organised awareness-cum Pulse Polio Camp in the premises of Bhaderwah Campus at Sungli.
The aim behind organizing Plus Polio campus in the Campus was to make the villagers of Sungli and its adjoining villages aware about the benefits of the immunization.
The Plus Polio Campus was inaugurated by the Rector Bhaderwah Campus Professor I A Hamal by administering Polio drop to an eight months infant. More then 115 children were administered Polio drop.
The NSS unit of Government MAM Government College Jammu organised a two-day workshop on “Pulse Polio Immunization”. The workshop was inaugurated by M S Baloria, Principal of the college who also flagged off the rally to create awareness among the masses.
The NSS volunteers accompanied by Hans Raj, NSS Programme Officer and social worker, Minu Jamwal took out the rally in slum areas of Rajiv Nagar and Qasim Nagar to make residents of the area aware about the importance of Pulse Polio Immunization.
A total of 339 children comprising 162 male and 177 female were administered polio drops by the NSS volunteers at Rajiv Nagar.
