`IOC is stronger than OIC' | Can JK afford division on communal lines? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 14: Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq intends to `forcefully' raise Kashmir issue in the organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). Political circles term it a desperate attempt to gain political mileage. The way New Delhi has been ignoring OIC resolutions and statements on Kashmir reflects the worthlessness of this organization. According to a renowned Kashmir based columnist Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is a stronger organization than the OIC. "When militants abducted Doraiswamy in early 90s, the IOC employees went on strike for a couple of days. This strike shook New Delhi and measures to secure abductee's safe release were taken. On the other hand OIC resolutions have never been taken seriously by government of India", he said. The Hurriyat chairman is fully aware that the `impotent' OIC has other important issues to address. India is too strong a country to succumb to OIC pressure if at all it is in a position to exert it. Surprisingly the OIC has miserably failed to solve the problems confronting the Muslim world. The sermons that renowned scholars deliver in various Islamic countries on Fridays are written either in Pentagon or Tel Aviv. The Hurriyat chairman, it seems, wants to internationalize the Kashmir issue by raising it yet again in a forum that has no say in the contemporary world. Ever since the commencement of armed insurgency in 1989, the separatists have desperately tried to highlight the issue at international level. Initially they succeeded to some extent but then came a time when the international community refused to take cognizance of their statements and reports. Even the Amnesty International took its hands off Kashmir. In the process of taking the issue outside, the people of India who are directly affected by the conflict in this Himalayan state were ignored. Many people in south India do not know where Kashmir is located. Even the people of the state were never consulted. Do the separatists know what people in Ladakh want? Are they aware of the aspirations of Jammu region? If the Valley based leadership seeks right to self determination for themselves and for the people of Kashmir, they must give the same right to people in Ladakh and Jammu. Before going out, the leaders must set their house in order. The attitude, thinking and modus operandi of the separatists would ultimately lead to division of the state and that too on communal lines. Can this state afford it?
