Azad ponders over fate of MCI with PM | | | ABID SHAH NEW DELHI: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad reportedly called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here this evening to discuss the crisis faced by the Medical Council of India. The MCI has fallen virtually headless ever since the suspension and arrest of its chief Ketan Desai in the wake of allegations related to bribery. Earlier, the Cabinet Committee that had met on Thursday had discussed the issue of appointing a panel of doctors to look after the highest regulatory body for the medical training and profession till the situation born after the arrest of its chairman by the Central Bureau of Investigation could be dealt with. Reports say that there is a move to dissolve MCI and pending its reformation a seven-member team of distinguished doctors selected by Government would fill the gap. Government has been also contemplating to bring an ordinance to deal with the MCI situation. And Azad's Ministry is said to be keeping the draft of the ordinance ready so as this could be promulgated by Rashtrapati Bhavan anytime. Earlier, Azad had said that he had referred the MCI matter to the Union Law Ministry for suitable action since MCI was an autonomous body constituted through an Act passed by Parliament where his Ministry could have hardly any control over it. The MCI chief was arrested last month along with two others through a trap laid by the CBI while bribe was allegedly changing hands for giving MCI's nod to a private medical college of Punjab. Ever since the MCI episode became known CBI has been planning a thorough probe into the businesses of private medical colleges. Since several of these colleges are run by political bigwigs or their cohorts, the probe has been moving with quite a bit of caution. Yet it is felt that any selective approach may not be able stem them deep set rot in the medical profession. Today's meeting of Azad with Manmohan Singh is crucial as the next Government move would signal about not only the fate of MCI but also private medical colleges. The Union Health Ministry has said that its actions vis-à-vis the shocking revelations about MCI would not affect students (of private medical colleges). Azad met Manmohan Singh this evening prior to leaving for Geneva where the Health Minister is supposed to attend a World Health Assembly being held under the auspices of World Health Organisation. Ostensibly, Azad called on Prime Minister to brief him about the agenda of the Geneva visit.
