Cabinet Sub- Committee to hold talks with employees tomorrow
5/14/2010 11:50:05 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, May 14: Cabinet today authorised a 5-member sub committee to hold a fresh series of talks with representatives of the government employees over their demands of disbursement of the pay arrears and increasing the superannuation bar from 58 to 60 years.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presided over the Cabinet meeting which took place at his Gupkar Road residence in the forenoon. Sources said that all the Cabinet Ministers, excluding Minister of Finance Abdul Rahim Rather and Minister of Tourism Rigzin Jora participated in the meeting. Both, Rather and Jora were reportedly preoccupied with more important official duties. Earlier this year, Omar Abdullah government had constituted a committee of five Cabinet Ministers---Abdul Rahim Rather, Taj Mohiuddin, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Surjit Singh Salathia and Ali Mohammad Sagar----to address the state government employees' grievances and interact with them on the sensitive issue.
In the wake of the failure of talks, Government announced its harsh decision of arresting the agitating and absenting employees under Essential Services Maintenance Act. However, the government failed to translate its statements and decisions into action and salary of none of the employees on agitation was deducted for the days of his/her absence from office.
It was finally a double bench of the state High Court that took cognizance of the trade union-sponsored strike and directed the trade union leaders to shun their path of strike and resume duties.
The employees on the strike suspended their agitation with the assertion that they would continue to fight and get their demanded conceded. In the wake of another deadlock in the dialogue between the employees and representatives of the government, trade union leaders had announced commencement of a fresh strike from today. However, the trade union leaders decided to monitor the outcome and said that they would resume the strike in a big away in case their Saturday evening talks with the cabinet sub committee failed.
Sources said that the meeting between the two parties would begin here at 1600 hours on Saturday.
