EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 15: Natrang celebrated its 28th foundation day here today with big fun-fare.
Established on May 15 with the presentation of classics like 'Neeli Jheel' and 'Nanhnen Kandhey Nanhnen Pair', the group emerged as one of the most active theatre organization of the country.
Founded by Balwant Thakur with the help of Vijay Attri, Prabodh Jamwal, Arun Sharma and later joined by Nariender Sachhar, Jugal Kaul, Suresh Sharma and Aasha Arora, Natrang in last 27 years produced record number of 185 major theatre productions of which over 5000 shows have been organized.
Natrang director Balwant Thakur while speaking on the occasion said that despite difficulties and constraints, Natrang with the help of thousands of its supporters and patrons have been able to establish Jammu as an International destination of theatre.
In these years Natrang produced hundreds of actors who made a name for themselves in theatre, television and films.
Prominent alumni who made Natrang proud included Suresh Kumar, Vijay Bhatt, Arvind Anand, Harish Khanna, Neelu Dogra, Anil Tickoo, Neeraj Kant, Sanjeev Gupta, Nikhil Mishra, Pawan Sharma, Vikrant Sharma, Renu Sharma, Sumeet Sharma, Bhanu Goswami, Ashish Nijhawan, Anjali Abrol, Sunil Palwal and Sunita Raina.
Among many of its accomplishments, Natrang enjoys the distinction of being the only theatre group of the country which has record number of 164 National and International participations.
In the year 2009, Natrang broke all-time record by featuring in six International Theatre Festivals.
Natrang's Sunday theatre programme has also made a record for being the only weekly theatre show of the country which is running without any break since last six years.
As a part of the 28th Foundation day celebrations, Natrang premiered a new Urdu play "Tajbeez' based on the Russian Classic 'The Marriage Proposal' written by Anton Chekov.
The play was adapted and directed by Balwant Thakur. The story of the play revolves around Shohab, a long-time neighbor of Rehmat Mirza has come to propose Rehmat's 25-year-old daughter, Sania.
After he has asked and received joyful permission to marry Sania, she is invited into the room, and he tries to convey to her the proposal. Shohab is a hypochondriac, and, while trying to make clear his reasons for being there, he gets into arguments with Sania about a disputed piece of land and ends up having palpitations and a numb leg.
After her father notices they are arguing, he joins in, and then throws Shohab out of the house.
Rehmat Mirza then tells his daughter that Shohab was about to propose, and at this news she immediately starts "dying" and screams for her father to bring him back.
He does, and Sania and Shohab get into a second big argument, this time about the superiority of their respective dogs. Shohab collapses and they fear he's died. However, after a few minutes he regains consciousness, and Rehmat forces him and his daughter to accept the proposal by asking them to hold the hands of eachother. Immediately following this, the couple get into yet another argument. Rohit Verma as Shohab and Mohit Sharma as Rehmat demonstrated their mettle through their prefect timings and body language. Rajani Bhat as Sania was at her best.
The sets were designed by Pankush Verma whereas Gaurav Jamwal did the lights. The show was coordinated by Pawan Verma and Sumeet Sharma did the presentations.
