Taps in Rajouri village spew water with 'monkey's blood'
Four dead monkeys in PHE water tank
5/15/2010 11:47:02 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, May 15: Callousness on the part of Public Health Engineering (PHE) could be gauged when four monkeys were reportedly found dead in a water tank catering to 3000 residents of Pululian village in Rajouri district. Shockingly, the villagers alleged that taps spewed water with monkey's blood. If the doctors have cautioned spread of jaundice in the area while the department refused to own the responsibility describing it as a "handiwork" of some local people to malign the image of the PHE officials working in the area.
According to the reports, four dead monkeys were found in main water tank in Pululian village from where at least 3000 residents are being supplied water on daily basis by the PHE department. Residents of this village said that these monkeys might have been dead in the tank a month ago. "These monkeys have been died 20 days ago but they came to know about the incident yesterday," Mohammad Hanief and Mohammad Aslam, residents of the village said. A former member of village Panchayat, Mohammad Rashid said, "We came to know from a local that two monkeys have died in the tank but they have recovered four from it." Following recovery of dead monkeys from the tank, locals reportedly protested against the department and demanded stern action against the local employees. Police has also rushed to the spot to control the erring mob.
The residents alleged that PHE has supplied water from the tank in two marriage functions of the village while a famous religious place "Ziarat" is also being supplied water from this tank.
Official sources informed that PHE has deputed four employees and one guard in the area.
"The cover of tank remained open and monkeys were frequently jumping in it to quench the thrust. Why the cover remained open? Why the tank was not being checked on daily basis?" locals questioned alleging that employees of the department have committed a great blunder and they must be taken to task for this.
However department seemed to be defending their employees. "Yes, we recovered Monkeys but they have been put into tank deliberately by some miscreants to malign our image," Executive Engineer PHE Rajouri Swaran Singh said, adding "We are checking the tank daily and we checked it in morning and there was nothing in it but some people complained in the afternoon that there were few monkeys in the Tank after which we have taken them out and washed tank." He said, "This is totally a handiwork of some miscreants. We are investigating the incident at our level."
Locals have complained that the tank has not been washed properly and the blood of monkeys is still in it but PHE has refuted it, saying tank has been washed properly and water is safe for drinking.
Meanwhile doctors have advised not to drink this water till the tank is properly washed as this can cause jaundice. "If dead monkeys were there, the water is dangerous for health and everybody should avoid drinking such water," Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Gurdeep said.
