Cheap Quality Meat: A health hazard for poor man | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 15: Normally on weekends rich and the famous party hard and tend to eat choicest recipes and tasty food and tease their taste buds by indulging in experimentation at social events and get togethers. But poor cannot go for hang outs at restaurants and have no other means of entertainment. Hence they end up eating what ever is available or they can afford to satisfy their self. There is no dearth of poor population in Jammu city who just cannot afford rich quality and lavish food buffets and binge on cheap quality meat, at their own risk under the watchful eyes of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) authorities. In the last couple of years such outlets selling cheap quality meat from unhygenic shops and counters have multiplied without any verification. Every day a group of poor women can be spotted under the Tawi bridge doing their basic job of cleaning cheap quality meat before selling it in the evening markets in their areas. Apart from this the left over portion of the meat is often sold at such places at cheaper rates but no authority has ever claimed to have raided the area to stop sale of cheap quality meat. Large number of shanties and open air kiosks sell cheap quality meat and JMC's Food Inspectors and Supervisors responsible for the job of keeping a check on the quality control seldom visit these areas to stop sale of such eatables. Areas such as Qasim Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Sainik Colony, Greater Kailash, Kunjwani, Satwari, Nai Basti, Chand Nagar, Gujjar Nagar, Bathindi, Paloura, New Plot, Talab Tilloo is famous for such markets where business of cheap quality meat is growing and more and more people are falling prey to variety of diseases which grip them after the consumption of such food items. Large number of poor people with whom this correspondent interacted said, "the entire official machinery of JMC focus their attention on selected lot of outlets and discharge their duties by completing all the formalities with modest help from the owners of the food outlets and shops running food businesses". "They have never bothered to visit these unauthorised market places and stop sale of cheap meat or set quality control markers which are needed to be adhered before selling such meat products", said a consumer.
