Politicians master ‘art’ of mud slinging, leg pulling | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 15: The present day politicians, it seems, have mastered the art of mudslinging and leg pulling. If recent utterances of politicians are any indicator then it is quite safe to presume that their intellect (if they had any) has registered considerable decline. The new found interest of the politicians leaves little time for addressing problems of the people. Congress leader and former minister, Ghulam Rasool Kar while addressing a convention at Ganderbal Saturday took a dig at Syed Ali Geelani. "He has double standards. When he was in assembly, he would swear by Indian constitution. Now he has an entirely different story to tell." Geelani, however, believes that all pro-accession politicians were charlatans. A National Conference leader called Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron and former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayed a snake and his daughter, Mahbooba Mufti a crocodile. "Mufti Sayed is an asteen ka sanp" (a snake that bites its master), he said. Mahbooba has been leveling charges of corruption and nepotism against the National Conference leaders. The NC also accused the PDP president of maligning the image of Sher-e-Kashmir. Former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son have been saying that there were no differences in the NC-Congress coalition. But, senior leader and Dr Farooq's brother, Dr Mustafa Kamal, according to a local news agency believes that Congress leaders were blackmailers. "Congress has been blackmailing the National Conference from the very beginning. They arrested Sher-e-Kashmir in 1953. In 1977 they withdrew support to Sheikh Abdullah. In 1984 they installed Ghulam Muhammad Shah and created a wedge in the Sheikh family", he said. Dr Farooq dissociated himself from a similar statement issued by Kamal Friday but he (Kamal) stood by his words saying: "When Congress issue statements against national Conference they have every right to respond. National Conference has not mortgaged its right to dissent with anybody." Kamal also accused former Chief Minsters Mufti Sayed and Ghulam Nabi Azad of hatching conspiracies against National Conference. Verbal duals between elderly ladies have always attracted crowds especially when fought along the banks of historic Jehlum. Besides cursing each other, the warring ladies would make obscene gestures to weaken the opponent. The on-going verbal war between politicians reminds one of those good old days. Perhaps in a bid to revive what they call cultural ethos, the politicians are washing dirty linen in public. But, they better go to elderly women for valuable tips!
