JU students in quandary, oppose 'raise' in retirement age | | | Arteev Sharma Early Times Report Jammu, May 17: If the Joint Committee of Jammu and Kashmir Universities is "actively" considering raising the retirement age of all University Professors, Registrars and equivalent positions, the move has evoked a strong reaction from the students particularly scholars community with majority of them describing it as an "attempt to ruin the future" of thousands of unemployed and educated youth. The constitution of the Joint Committee for making recommendations on extending the retirement age of teaching fraternity had put the scholars in quandary and the recent move of "active consideration" on such proposal has further raised several doubts in the minds of students. In an interaction with this scribe the students expressed certain reservations over the proposal. Sunil Sharma, a scholar from Department of Mathematics said: An increase in the retirement age would result in massive unemployment for today's youth. The students are especially concerned about jobs that would fail to open up in the teaching sector. The government should keep in mind all pros and cons of such move. If the posts are laying vacant in the varsities, the government should fill up these vacancies on fast track by giving fair chance to the scholars who are still deprived of jobs. Tanu Sharma, a second semester student from Department of Chemistry: "I believe that increasing the retirement age would cause unemployment, especially for youngsters, and would also cause other problems too. If the government is actively considering the proposal they should bear in mind that it would not only increase the problem of unemployment but also block the job opportunities for thousands of educated youth in educational institutions for a gap of two to five years." Sunil Sharma, a scholar from Department of Dogri said: The students and scholars should voluntarily come forward to oppose this move as it would further magnify the unemployment problems in Jammu and Kashmir. The decision of enhancing retirement age is totally a wrong step and grave injustice with thousands of students. "Will it be a wise decision to extend the retirement age if all the professors could not serve effectively after 60 years owing to several health problems?" he questioned. Rakesh Chib, president Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA) opined: Instead of proposing enhancement of retirement age the Joint Committee constituted by different Universities should reduce superannuation period for two years. "Our organization would oppose the move with tooth and nail as it is anti-students and anti-unemployed youth. If they enhance retirement age for two years, it would render thousands of educated youth jobless for years together," he said. Nisha Choudhary, a student from Department of Chemistry was not aware about any such move and said: "We should first judge all the merits and demerits of the proposal before making any remarks over it. Let us judge whether the proposal would affect the scholars and students." She however, said: "Extending the retirement age will not solve the problems with social insurance or with the economy in general. Quite the opposite, it will create a string of problems in society. Changing the retirement age is an issue that concerns us too because it will play a role in our lives in the future."
