Red-tapeism: 53 Ayurvedic doctors awaiting postings
5/17/2010 11:49:52 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 17: Given the administrative red-tapeism, 53 Ayurvedic doctors, who were appointed almost five months back, have been waiting for posting orders notwithstanding they were willing to serve the people anywhere in the State.
Interestingly, these doctors come to the director's office on regular basis to mark the attendance and that too, without salaries but they have not been assigned any duty since their appointment.
The doctors preferring anonymity said that the State Government refers these posts to Public Service Commission (PSC) on need basis. "53 doctors have been selected and appointed but they have nothing to do as they were not assigned any work," they said.
They lamented, "The Government is not serious about the promoting Ayurvedic system of medicine in the state. We used to come to the Director's office just to mark the attendance that too without salaries." The doctors further added that to justify the dismal picture of health sector in the state, the State Government always claimed that there is deficiency of doctors but it is not understandable that what is stopping them from posting these doctors to serve the people of the state.
The aggrieved doctors questioned, "Is it not the wastage of public money to give salaries to the doctors without work. "J&K is one of the states in the country having least doctor-patient ratio. Despite this, the posting of doctors is coupled with bureaucratic hurdles."
The doctors stated that on one hand, the department is awarding performance based awards to the doctors and other paramedical staff; on the other hand it has failed to utilize the services of the already appointed Ayurvedic doctors. No one in the department is taking out plight seriously.
The doctors also demanded that the post of Deputy Director should be filled up on permanent basis not on temporary basis. Talking to a local news agency, Director, Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM), Dr Kabir Khan stated, "We are in dire need of the services of these doctors. We have sent the proposal to the Government for their postings in Ayurvedic Dispensaries of the state. They could be posted only after the proposal is got approved by the government. As far as issue of their salaries of three months is concerned, same would be released after their posting."
