Dowry death accused denied bail | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May17 : The court of 2nd Additional district and sessions judge, Jammu Monday rejected the bail application of an accused facing charges of killing his daughter-in-law for want of dowry. The petitioner/accused, Sadhu Ram repeatedly demanded dowry from his daughter-in-law and instigated his son Rattan Chand to beat her. According to the police, a complaint was lodged t on April 9, 2010 by complainant Krishan Chand stating that his daughter married to Rattan Chand s/o Sadhu Ram about five years back faced harassment at the hands of her in-laws in their 7 Ambedkar Nagar residence at Jammu. The report said that Rattan Chand started beating the complainant's daughter immediately after marriage. "The demand for dowry never ended. About 15/16 days back, a Panchayat meeting was convened where her daughter informed the people of the assault on her and demands for dowry by her husband and father-in-law. The matter was mutually settled after the accused promised that the complainant's daughter will not be harassed again. But on April 9, 2010 at 8:00 Clock, he came to know that his daughter had ended her life." Accordingly the police swung into action and arrested Rattan Chand. His father Sadhu Ram has gone into hiding. Taking note of the gravity of the crime, the presiding officer of the court Vinod Chatterji Koul held that the complainant's daughter was forced to end her life. "The case is at the initial stage and from the report of police the evidence so far collected there are sufficient grounds to presume at this stage that the accused have been falsely implicated in the case." The application as accordingly rejected.
