Students go berserk over police post row
5/17/2010 11:50:38 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 17: The students' agitation in Jammu University against establishment of police post on the campus took an ugly turn as the agitating students went on rampage and damaged the university property here this afternoon.
Police, however, acted swiftly and resorted to mild cane charge to prevent them from continuing the destruction and damaging the property.
As per the statement, at least seven students received minor injuries in police cane charge.
The trouble erupted when a strong group of students marched towards the Administrative Block and shouted slogans against the Vice Chancellor, Varun Sahni accusing him of following "dictatorial policies."
The agitating students were demanding removal of police post from the campus alleging students were being repeatedly harassed by the police cops deployed here. The students were protesting under the banner of Students Scholar Committee against Police Post (SSCAP), an amalgam of several students' organizations.
They forcibly made an attempt to enter the Administrative Block which was stopped by a strong contingent of the police cops that led to a minor scuffle. The situation turned violent when some of the students smashed the window panes and doors of the Administrative Block which invited the wrath of the police cops who resorted to mild cane charge to disperse the protestors.
Notably, a delegation of the Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA) headed by its president Rakesh Chib was holding meeting with the Vice Chancellor over the issue when incident occurred.
As soon as the JURSEA members received the information about the cane charge on the students, they left the meeting midway and came out of the office of the Vice Chancellor in protest against the baton charge.
The protestors claimed that the girl students of Law Department also got injuries in the police action and were shifted to the Gandhi Nagar Hospital.
Later, the student leaders unanimously decided to boycott all the classes in Jammu University from tomorrow and warned that any action on students would further deteriorate the situation on the campus.
