2 member Amnesty team arrives in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 17: A two member team of the Amnesty International arrived in the summer capital on Monday to take stock of the human rights situation in Kashmir. The team comprises of two Indian born London based Indians who represent the Indian team in the south Asian chapter of the organization Immediately after their arrival in Srinagar, the team members Ramesh Gopal Krishnan and Bikramjeet Batra visited the residence of detained Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chairman, Shabir Shah at Rawalpora on Monday afternoon. Shabir's wife and party workers apprised the team of Shabir ailment in the jail and failure of the authorities to provide suitable medicare to him. Shabir has been undergoing detention under public safety act (PSA) for the past two years. During the past two years, the high court has quashed as many as five detentions under the PSA but every time the authorities have come up with fresh detention orders. The team is expected to meet separatist leaders and the Bar Association Tuesday. The team also intends to meet sufferers and the general public in the coming days. The team shall stay in Srinagar for a week. The team is expected to concentrate mainly on the preventive detention laws and "its ruthless and reckless 'use by the authorities. The Amnesty team has been allowed for the first time in twenty years to visit Kashmir. Most of the separatists and human rights defenders have welcomed the visit.
